On a sunny Saturday morning, our team had the chance to visit and learn about Steveston's Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site and the Britannia Shipyards. These sites contained nearly a hundred years of Chinese-Canadian history, and their living environment and communities. The tourist guide spoke at great detail about the dangerous work conditions and unequal treatment of the Chinese in factories. This reflected the racial discrimination against Chinese people in Vancouver at the time. After visiting the historical commune of the Chinese workers, we discovered the simple and crude facility as well as the crowed spaces that reflected the harsh living conditions of the time. Before this tour, our team didn't know the rich history of Chinese-Canadians in Steveston, however, after hours of exploring, we established a deeper emotion and understanding towards the history of Chinese-Canadians on this land.
