It was an interesting experience to walk around the neighbourhood and link together what we have learned in class to these historical buildings and sites. I would strongly recommend everyone to visit the Sun Yat Sen Garden if you have the chance. There are many modern buildings around the area, but the garden creates a significant contrast with the modern world. It is perfect for enjoying some quiet alone time admiring the beautiful view.

Hi, my name is Iain and I am a history professor, currently teaching at Alexander College. I brought approximately 60 of my students in the Canadian History class here to tour around Chinatown and Gastown today. This way, the students can make connections between classroom knowledge and how it is grounded in Vancouver. It was a fun, long day and we have visited many interesting places. Although this is our first time hosting the tour, I would like to make this an annual activity so that more students will be able to engage and understand some of the histories in this area. Hi, my name is Tian Qi, my family and I moved to Vancouver when I was little. Being raised outside of China has been slowly affecting my personality and my knowledge about my hometown. This is why I think Chinatown is a great place for me to learn about the first group of Chinese immigrants and myself. Without these people fighting for our needs, we would’ve never been able to live here. And visiting these places, I feel privileged and have felt a re-found connection with my heritage.
